How to Receive Prophecy

What is a prophet’s role?

Genesis 18.16-19: 16And the men rose up from there and looked toward Seḏom, and Aḇraham went with them to send them away. 17And יהוה said, “Shall I hide from Aḇraham what I am doing, 18since Aḇraham is certainly going to become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19“For I have known him, so that he commands his children and his household after him, to guard the way of יהוה, to do righteousness and right-ruling, so that יהוה brings to Aḇraham what He has spoken to him.”

Amos 3.3-8: 3Would two walk together, without having met? 4Does a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey? Does a young lion give forth his voice out of his den unless he has caught? 5Does a bird fall into a snare on the earth, where there is no trap for it? Does a snare spring up from the earth, if it has not captured prey? 6If a ram’s horn is blown in a city, do the people not tremble? If there is calamity in a city, shall not יהוה have done it? 7For the Master יהוה does no matter unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets. 8A lion has roared! Who is not afraid? The Master יהוה has spoken! Who would not prophesy?

Prophetic Precedence

John 5.28-47: 28“Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the tombs shall hear His voice, 29and shall come forth – those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have practised evil matters, to a resurrection of judgment. 30“Of Myself I am unable to do any matter. As I hear, I judge, and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own desire, but the desire of the Father who sent Me. 31“If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true. 32“There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. 33“You have sent to Yoḥanan, and he bore witness to the truth. 34“But I do not receive witness from man, but I say this in order that you might be saved. 35“He was the burning and shining lamp, and for a while you wished to rejoice in his light. 36“But I have a greater witness than that of Yoḥanan, for the works that the Father gave Me to accomplish, the works that I do, bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. 37“And the Father who sent Me, He bore witness of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. 38“And you do not have His Word staying in you, because you do not believe Him whom He sent. 39“You search the Scriptures, because you think you possess everlasting life in them. And these are the ones that bear witness of Me. 40“But you do not desire to come to Me in order to possess life. 41“I do not receive esteem from men, 42but I know you, that you do not have the love of Elohim in you. 43“I have come in My Father’s Name and you do not receive Me, if another comes in his own name, him you would receive. 44“How are you able to believe, when you are receiving esteem from one another, and the esteem that is from the only Elohim you do not seek? 45“Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Mosheh, in whom you have set your expectation. 46“For if you believed Mosheh, you would have believed Me, since he wrote about Me. 47“But if you do not believe his writings, how shall you believe My words?”

What is the power of a prophet?

1 Kings 13.1-6: 1And see, a man of Elohim went from Yehuḏah to Bĕyth Ěl by the word of יהוה, while Yaroḇ‛am was standing by the altar to burn incense. 2And he cried out against the altar by the word of יהוה, and said, “O altar, altar! Thus said יהוה, ‘See, a son is to be born to the house of Dawiḏ, Yoshiyahu is his name. And on you he shall offer the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and men’s bones be burned on you.’” 3And he gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign which יהוה has spoken: See, the altar is split apart, and the ashes on it is poured out.” 4And it came to be when Sovereign Yaroḇ‛am heard the saying of the man of Elohim, who cried out against the altar in Bĕyth Ěl, that he stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him!” Then his hand, which he stretched out toward him, dried up, so that he was unable to bring it back to him. 5And the altar was split apart, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of Elohim had given by the word of יהוה. 6And the sovereign answered and said to the man of Elohim, “Please appease the face of יהוה your Elohim, and pray for me, that my hand might be restored to me.” And the man of Elohim appeased the face of יהוה, and the sovereign’s hand was restored to him, and became as it was before.

Ezekiel 37.1-141The hand of יהוה was upon me and took me out by the Spirit of יהוה, and set me down in the midst of the valley. And it was filled with bones. 2And He made me pass among them, all around, and see, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and see, they were very dry. 3And He said to me, “Son of man, would these bones live?” And I said, “O Master יהוה, You know.” 4Again He said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and you shall say to them, ‘O dry bones, hear the word of יהוה! 5‘Thus said the Master יהוה to these bones, “See, I am bringing into you a spirit, and you shall live. 6“And I shall put sinews on you and bring flesh upon you, and cover you with skin and put a spirit in you, and you shall live. And you shall know that I am יהוה.”’” 7And I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a noise, and there was a rattling. And the bones came together, bone to bone. 8And I looked and saw sinews and flesh came upon them, and skin covered them, but there was no spirit in them. 9He then said to me, “Prophesy to the spirit, prophesy, son of man, and you shall say to the spirit, ‘Thus said the Master יהוה, “Come from the four winds, O spirit, and breathe on these slain, so that they live.”’”10And I prophesied as He commanded me, and the spirit came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, a very great army. 11And He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are all the house of Yisra’ĕl. See, they say, ‘Our bones are dry, our expectancy has perished, and we ourselves have been cut off!’ 12“Therefore prophesy, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus said the Master יהוה, “See, O My people, I am opening your graves, and shall bring you up from your graves, and shall bring you into the land of Yisra’ĕl. 13“And you shall know that I am יהוה, when I open your graves, O My people, and bring you up from your graves. 14“And I shall put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I shall settle you in your own land. And you shall know that I יהוה have spoken, and I have done it,” declares יהוה.’ ”

2 Esdras 13.14-38: 14 “From the beginning you showed your servant these wonders, and you considered me worthy that you should receive my prayer. 15 Now show me also the interpretation of this dream. 16 As I turn it over in my mind, I think: How terrible it will be for those who will be left in those days, and how much worse for those who aren’t left! 17 Those who aren’t left will be full of sorrow, 18 since they now know what lies in store for the last days, but they won’t live to see them. But how terrible it will be also for those who are left, 19 for that very reason! They will see great dangers, and there will be many kinds of distress, as these dreams show. 20 Yet it is better to encounter these things, even incurring danger, than to pass from the world like a cloud and not see what happens at the end.” 21 He answered me, “I will tell you the interpretation of the dream as well, and I will explain to you the things you spoke about. 22 As to what you said about those who are left, this is the interpretation: 23 He who brings the danger at that time will himself guard those who fall into danger, who have works and faith in the most mighty one. 24 Know, therefore, that those who are left enjoy greater privilege than those who have died. 25 The interpretations of the vision are as follows: “In that you saw a man going up from the heart of the sea, 26 that is the one whom the Most High has been keeping for many ages. He will liberate God’s creation all by himself, and he will put in order those who are left. 27 “In that you saw something like wind and fire and storm go out of his mouth, 28 and that he didn’t hold a spear or weapon of war, yet destroyed the rush of that multitude that had come to fight him, here is the interpretation: 29 Look, the days are coming when the Most High will begin to rescue those who are on the earth. 30 Those who live on earth will go out of their minds. 31 They will plan to wage war against each other, city against city, place against place, nation against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 32 When these things happen, and the signs that I showed you before take place, then my Son will be revealed, whom you saw as a man rising up. 33 When all the nations hear his voice, then each one will leave its own region and will leave off the wars they were waging against each other. 34 An innumerable mob will be gathered together, as you saw, wanting to come and fight against him. 35 But he will take his stand on the summit of Mount Zion. 36 Zion will come and will appear to all, built and ready, as you saw a mountain carved without hands. 37 My Son himself will indict the assembled nations for their impious deeds—these things were indicated by the storm. He will scold them for their evil plans and reveal the torments with which they are about to be tortured. These things correspond to the flame. 38 He will destroy them without effort by the Law, which was indicated by the fire.

The conclusion of the matter:

Isaiah 52.6“Therefore My people shall know My Name, in that day, for I am the One who is speaking. See, it is I.” 7How pleasant upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings good news, who proclaims deliverance, who says to Tsiyon, “Your Elohim reigns!” 8The voice of your watchmen! They shall lift up their voices, together they shout for joy, because eye to eye they see the return of יהוה to Tsiyon.

Revelation 19.5-10: 5And a voice came from the throne, saying, “Praise our Elohim, all you His servants and those who fear Him, both small and great!” 6And I heard as the voice of a great crowd, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunders, saying, “Halleluyah, for יהוה Ěl Shaddai reigns! 7“Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him praise, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife prepared herself.” 8And to her it was given to be dressed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteousnesses of the set-apart ones. 9And he said to me, “Write, ‘Blessed are those who have been called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he said to me, “These are the true words of Elohim.” 10And I fell at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “See, do not do it! I am your fellow servant, and of your brothers who possess the witness of יהושע. Worship Elohim! For the witness of יהושע is the spirit of prophecy.”

Hebrews 3.1-7: 1Therefore, set-apart brothers, partakers of the heavenly calling, closely consider the Emissary and High Priest of our confession, Messiah יהושע,2 who was trustworthy to Him who appointed Him, as also Mosheh in all His house. 3For this One has been deemed worthy of more esteem than Mosheh, as much as He who built the house enjoys more respect than the house. 4For every house is built by someone, but He who built all is Elohim. 5And Mosheh indeed was trustworthy in all His house as a servant, for a witness of what would be spoken later, 6but Messiah as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the boldness and the boasting of the expectation firm to the end. 7Therefore, as the Set-apart Spirit says, “Today, if you hear His voice…
